The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering has welcomed statements from both the Government and the Opposition emphasising the importance of science and research for Australia.
Importantly, the Government further identified the vital contribution of technology to Australia.
Academy President, Professor Hugh Bradlow FTSE, welcomed the fact that science and research policy will be an election issue for the major parties.
“However, while investment in the science and research sector is vital to generate new knowledge and ideas, it is the translation of those insights through technology and engineering that is vital to Australia’s economic growth.
“Commercialisation of research benefits all Australians and equips Australia to implement sustainable solutions to our national challenges and advance our nation’s prosperity,” he said.
“To date, Labor’s science and research statement implies that it is science alone that leads to the prosperity of the country.
“However, it is the application of science through technology and engineering, winning social support for those steps and ensuring that industry adopts technology and has viable business models that will drive our prosperity.
“To bring certainty to the sector, the Academy urges Labor as it prepares for its national conference to round out its science and research statement with a technology and commercialisation statement,” Professor Bradlow said.
